It seems that Patriotism, Sports and the American Flag go hand in hand. I have learned that being a sports photographer is so much more that just shooting action during the sporting event. It is about seeing the event as a visual happening that I am there to record. I shoot everything that catches my eye and am always looking for a nice angle on a subject with great light. Here are a few samples from different events highlighting the American Flag.
Jimmy Johnson: The NASCAR drivers were being driven around the track before the start of the race and I was waiting by the cars as they went by. The sun was setting and the light was beautiful on his face with the flag blowing behind him. To nice to pass up. It is a symbolic image that is about the all American sport of NASCAR.
Arkansas Razorbacks running onto field: When they fire up the smoke machines for the football players to run through you cannot see a thing. If the wind shifts your direction you just hope you do not get run over. I was not sure if I was going to get any images at all. I finally just held up the camera with a 24mm lens and fired away. When I see a photo like this I usually prefocus on where I think the players will be and then turn off the autofocus. I was shooting at f/8 for the depth of field and figured I would players in focus. It is a image that combines f/8 and Be There, and luck at the same time.
Tennessee Titans player: He was standing at the edge of the tunnel getting ready to run onto the field for pregame. It just worked and the expression on his face says a lot. This is where I love shooting RAW. I know the exposure between the sun and shadow will be tough but with a RAW file you can bring down the highlights and pull out some of the shadows.
Flag: Just a nice American Flag photo with nice light through the smoke of pregame as the Flag is run onto the field. Shoot Shoot Shoot.
